A former leading fashion model at 5'10'' in height, Carey was an a fan favorite of top American designers such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Her father was an outstanding geologist who was in 1979 named Scientist of the year from the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists. Carey has traveled all over the world due to his profession. She started modeling part time when she was a student at college at University of Colorado and caught the attention of a representative for the Ford model Agency in New York. Her move to France in the year 1980, and lived briefly in Paris and Bordeaux before deciding to return home to New York to continue with her college education and modeling career.
